Standing in the shadow of York Minster, this ancient inn was the birthplace of the notorious plotter intent on blowing up the Houses of Parliament on 5 November 1605. Today the inn is the finest in the city and one of the best-preserved in the country. With gas lighting, timber floors, roaring log fires, huge settles, ales served from barrels behind the bar and a grandfather clock ticking in the corner, this dark and mysterious inn is a treasure. It is also home to the world-famous Guy Fawkes Ghost Walk. There are beautiful hotel bedrooms and the stunning Belfry Suite. Free parking is available in the centre of York; reserve your car parking permit when making your reservation.

Location

High Petergate, York , YO1 7HP

York is one of the most intriguing cities in England and is a city layered with history, beauty and variety. Superbly preserved, York has witnessed more than 2000 years of history.

There are many attractions in York. Highlights include the magnificent York Minster, the world's biggest and best railway museum and the Castle Museum with its perfectly recreated Victorian and Edwardian street-scenes. Let 21st century technology transport you back to Viking Age York at Jorvik or marvel at William the Conqueror's Clifford's Tower and wander through York Dungeon.

Quaint teashops and pedestrianised streets make York an ideal city to explore on foot. Enjoy self-guided themed tours on churches, food, the riverside, railway heritage, Roman York and the city walls. Take one of '5 routes to retail heaven' around cobbled streets containing 2000 shops.

As a city of festivals, York boasts a year-round calendar of Viking, Roman, Christmas, music, antique, comedy, books, food and drink and horse-racing events. York hosts premier horse racing at one of the UK's leading courses. York is also home to the UK's Festival of Food and Drink in September.
